Our Stories, Our Strength
June marks Gun Violence Awareness Month, a time to honor those impacted by violence and to uplift prevention efforts.

This year, youth leaders from Muskegon Violence Prevention (MVP) in Muskegon, Michigan, and Young Different Minds (YDM) Washington, D.C., have ignited a nationwide storytelling campaign – Our Stories, Our Strength – to put youth experiences and resilience at the forefront.
Why “Our Stories, Our Strength” Is Needed
In America, gun violence affects young people in all communities. But behind every statistic is a unique story—a journey of healing, struggle, and hope. This campaign was created by youth, for youth, to break the stigma around gun violence, encourage empathy, and ensure that survivors’ voices are truly heard.
By offering a safe and anonymous space for individuals ages 13–24 to share their stories, youth leaders are forging solidarity and inspiring others to speak up. As one leader said, “As youth, we’re carrying more than adults can see. So, we’re telling our truths ourselves. It’s time to pass the mic and listen to our stories.”
